Toolbox

From 9 to 15 years of age I spent my summers with my grandfather in South Carolina. These were the best three months of my life at that age. I spend most of the time fixing my go-cart I destroyed daily, driving golf balls into the woods only the have my grandfather yell at me because gold balls apparently cost money, farming with him and my cousins or helping him fixing something I wish he left where ever he found it.

You might ask where these tools came into play, well Mr. Boyd loves to fix and create. He sometimes makes custom furniture, decks and does electrical work. Considering my grandfather only went to school until 6th grade and didn't learn to read until I was 13 using Hooked on Phonics, he found a way to make a living for his family and himself. I love my grandfather, his drive for success and constant encouragement regardless of whatever I wanted to accomplish in life.

Although there are hundreds of tools, parts and.....things, he could tell you exactly where.....it is.

Book Smart

The process isn't short, but it's so worth it. I love photo shoots from beginning to end. Well that just it, just because I have placed the camera down doesn't mean I'm done. There is so much more work that goes on behind the scenes, and post production work that need to happen. For this shoot in particular there were so many moving parts and people involved. Those people involved helped to make the final product of this book beautiful and a success.

Some people make it look so easy!

Professional models are always fun to shoot, but my some of my favorite people to photograph are regular people. People who never though "they" could come across just as beautiful, just as sexy and surprise themselves in the end. This was exactly the case with Brandee. Cool girl, proud mom, always smiling and full of energy. She came to the table with her own thoughts and ideas. She knew what she wanted and only needed my pointer finger to press the trigger.......ok and a couple lights. Although she knew what she wanted, it doesn't mean there we no butterfly for her. Never having been in a boudoir shoot and showing yourself to someone you barely know can be a little scarey, understandably. After a short chat and reassuring her, she forgot I was even around!

Baby Steps!

Although photography is my first love, I have been really receptive to HD video and using my Nikon P7700 digital camera and Go Pro 3 to capture HD footage.  I have yet to use any of the footage I have shoot but I know I will soon. What I worked on first was a short video intro to start prior to the actual teasers I have and will continue to make. Well hear it is. I would love to hear your feedback!

Choo Choo Trains....as promised!

A couple weeks ago I said I would post the images of the trains I shot with my Mamiya RZ67 so here they are. I was very pleased with the quality of the images that the camera helped to produce. I shot in B&W film and I love the final results. I'm thinking the majority of my film images will be in B&W, but time will tell.

Field of Dreams

Or lack there of.........Although I am a huge fan of fashion, glamor, and beauty photography, I believe you have to step outside your comfort zone and try new things then bring back what you have learned to your normal arena. While visiting South Carolina I did just that. It was not about pretty smiles, fancy heals, or blingy things from head to toe. I took a look at an open field and decided to make it my playground (while praying not to get shot on some guys property.) I got Nicole to be my victim for a bit and proceeded to the open field. It was pretty fun considering shes never had a photo shoot before, let alone forced to shoot barefoot, in an all black dress and in an open field crawling with natures finest.

Alone time...

Phone (check), Headphones (check), Phone (check again), Camera (hmmmmm which one James? Mamiya. Which Mamiya James? "The newer one", check) Location....(I will figure it out). Sometime you just gotta go exploring....yeah I will go with that....exploring. Like I use to tell my mother. I guess not much has changed in that area, but that's what I did. With no destination in mind I went a small journey to capture some imagery on medium film. With my perplexing case of ADHD, I wanted to give myself a challenge....CALM the hell down for at least for an hour.

With headphones on and Spotify rocking in my pocket, I hopped out at a train yard and got to it. I briefly looked at the trains and tracks then proceeded to snap away at these massive vehicles which have been around for more then 200 years. Good things seem to last, I hope to fall into that category.

I will the show the images after they are developed, but for now here is a taste.

Palate Exchange

Sometimes you just need to order something different off the menu. If you order the same sandwich every time you visit your favorite eatery, you aren't having a different experience or enjoying other options that are available to you. I was in need of something different for Jesselah Harris-McGrath. She is a beautiful lady that can kill a bass guitar, a set of heels and stun you with a smile, but I already knew that. I wanted to take her out of her own comfort zone and capture her unlike she has ever experienced before. I gave her nothing...no props, no makeup artist, no sexy location...nothing. Jesselah doesn't fail.
